Hans Günter Merz, Prof Dr (hon), is a founder and director of hg merz architekten museumsgestalter. After studying architecture in Stuttgart, he worked and researched in the fields of alternative construction approaches and experimental buildings in Germany and the USA. HG Merz was Professor for Exhibition Design at University of Applied Sciences in Pforzheim and for Experimental Design at Technical University Darmstadt. Currently, he is the President of the University Council of Bauhaus University Weimar and teaches and gives lectures to various audiences around the world.
Founded in 1981, his office specializes in exhibition and museum design, visual communication, and media planning. In addition, HG Merz concentrates on renovating and enhancing significant historic buildings. In every project the object itself is in the centre of attention – be it building or exhibit. Supporting the object‘s aura, carefully equilibrating the old and the new, making the different contexts talk is the key approach for all works of HG Merz. Major listed buildings projects include the Old National Gallery Berlin, Berlin State Library, and Berlin State Opera. Some of the projects, like Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen Memorial and Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, integrate exhibition and renovation work. The office‘s museum projects cover different fields, cultural history museums (e.g. Ruhr Museum Essen, Military History Museum Dresden) as well as art museums (e.g. Kunstkammer at Art History Museum Vienna) and brand museums (e.g. Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart). In his projects, HG Merz often cooperates with other architects such as Daniel Libeskind, UNStudio, and BIG. He curates exhibitions, creates master plans for museums, and provides consultancy to both clients and architects.
On 12 October 2015 Hans Günter Merz delivered Trash / Treasure: Reanimating Objects lecture at the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage Museum.
