On 8 December 2017, as part of the Hermitage Days, the presentation of the new open-storage facility Display Cases and the Look of the Museum took place at the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre. The display contains a variety of showcases that tell about the evolution of the museum space from Catherine the Great’s time to the early 21st century.
“The Hermitage showcases are a story of the succession of styles, about the splendid architects who created the many-faceted museum interiors which is addressed both to the visitor and to the museum exhibit,” Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, observes.
If we picture the history of the Hermitage as the history of its halls, then it is possible to see the most striking changes, prompted not only by the succession of different artistic styles, but, above all, by changes in the conception of the museum. Besides the architectural décor, they found expressions in the museum fittings – the showcases.
Visits to the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre are only possible on guided tours.
