St Petersburg Biennale of Museum Design3
09/11 – 19/12/2018

2018 makes a special double anniversary for St Petersburg Museum of Theatre and Music: 100 + 10 years. The Museum was officially established in 1918, yet the core of its collection is made up of the materials of the «First Russian Theatre Exhibition» of 1908. 110 years later the Museum presents the most compelling acquisitions and donations received in the last decade (2008-2018). Alongside with the gems of the Nina & Nikita Lobanov-Rostovsky Collection the recent donations by Nina Lobanov-Rostovsky from her part of the Collection are displayed for the first time. The exhibition also features unique materials from the archives of Serge Lifar and Olga Spesivtseva; a complete set of costumes made by Pierre Cardin for Maya Plisetskaya; rare photos; costumes of contemporary ballet stars from the collection of the producers Gaiane and Sergey Danilyan as well as many other objects.

The exhibition designed by Prof. Uwe R. Brückner and Ulrike Schlemm (Germany) features the objects received by the Museum in the last 10 years placed side by side in harmony with the existing permanent display items taking into account the overall stylistic concept of the historical rooms. The designers used the blue colour and a navigation system to mark the planted temporary objects and help the visitors identify the items related to the «100+10» exhibition. The colour code serves as a background for the exhibition surfaces appearing on the floor, texts, showcases and pass-partouts. A delicate approach to design afforded a dialogue between the historical part of the display and the objects from the temporary exhibition. The exhibition prologue and epilogue uses a musical theme that brings together all the parts of the display as an underlying hidden rhythm.
